Self Introduction and My Definition of PR
Hi, my name is Cadence Turpin. I am a sophomore at Clemson University majoring in Communication Studies. I am from Georgia and never knew much about Clemson until I moved here. Outside of my academic work, I write and intern for CUTigers.com. I am also a Young Life Leader and volunteer with FCA. I am a driven, compassionate, and outgoing individual seeking to accomplish great things in the Communications field and to invest greatly in the people I am surrounded with daily.
My definition of the Public Relations industry is too scattered to be made into just one sentence. As Bill Sledzik’s blog illustrated, there are several components that define Public Relations and its contribution to the successes of organizations. In my opinion, Public Relations encompasses the strategic communication and advocacy process that is necessary to occur between an organization and its clients or consumers. As a PR professional, one’s work consists of an extensive amount of research and education about the organization’s clients and those clients’ needs. Then, you must be able to effectively carry on a trustworthy and intentional relationship between both parties in order to make beneficial advances and changes. Although this is a broad narrative of how PR works, I believe it outlines the deliberate, principled, and continuous communication process that this industry has become. I think the reason the definition of Public Relations is so often debated and challenged is because the tactics of the industry deviate between different organizations and their goals. Not every organization approaches PR with the same methods, but what we do find is that companies that effectively prioritize PR usually profit the highest.
